Mozambique represented at the 15th Bamako African Biennale of Photography

Mozambican artist Eurídice Zaituna Kala is part of the official selection for the 15th edition of the Rencontres de Bamako – African Biennale of Photography, one of Africa’s leading events dedicated to photography and contemporary image-making practices.

The Biennale will take place from 26 November 2026 to 26 January 2027 in Bamako, Mali, bringing together 49 artists selected through an international open call that received hundreds of applications from Africa, the African diasporas and other regions of the world.

Born in Mozambique and also associated with France in the profile presented by the organisers, Eurídice Zaituna Kala joins artists from different geographies and generations in a programme spanning photography, archives, installation, sculpture, video, performance and other contemporary forms of image-making.

Under the artistic direction of chief curator Armelle Dakouo, this year’s edition is held under the theme “REFABULATION(S)”, inviting reflection on the ability of images to document, invent, shift and reconstruct narratives. The selected works address issues including family memory, historical narratives, migration, identity, territory, heritage and social transformation.

The programme also includes artist residencies, special projects and a tribute to Malick Sidibé, one of the most influential figures in African photography.

Founded in 1994, the Rencontres de Bamako were the first major international event on the continent dedicated to African photography and video and remain among its most prominent. Held biennially in Mali’s capital, the Biennale has, over more than three decades, established itself as a platform for discovery, exchange and the international promotion of photographers from Africa and its diasporas. Figures such as Malick Sidibé, Seydou Keïta and Samuel Fosso form part of the history of an event that has helped expand the visibility of African photography within the international contemporary art scene.

Eurídice Zaituna Kala’s participation in the 15th edition once again places Mozambican artistic creation within one of the continent’s leading spaces for encounter and reflection on the image.
