Mozambican Nuno Silas at the Bamako Biennale of Photography

The curators of the 14th edition of the Bamako Biennale of Photography have announced the 30 artists who will take part in the group exhibition La Panafricaine, and among them is Mozambican interdisciplinary artist Nuno Silas.

Rencontres de Bamako, one of Africa’s most important art events, will take place in October in the capital of Mali and its theme is ‘Kuma’, which means ‘Word’.

‘Photography, by its very nature, is a silent art. Silently, it appeals to our visual senses. Choosing Kuma, the Word, as the theme for the 14th edition of the Bamako Encounters/African Biennial of Photography may seem strange, but it is precisely in this paradox that the interest lies. For the artists, it’s about exploring new forms, experimenting with dialogues between word and image, making the moments of speech, eloquence, anger, but also of hope, meditation, silence, cacophony and noise exist plastically.’ The note on the theme reads.

Nuno Silas is an interdisciplinary artist; his practice involves experimental installations, photography, short films, sound, performances and paintings. Nuno Silas was born in Maputo, Mozambique, and lives between Germany, Mozambique and Portugal. He has a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the School of Fine Arts and Design (Caldas da Rainha-Portugal). He is currently a finalist in a master’s programme in media and literature of African verbal and visual arts at the University of Bayreuth-Germany.
