Yara Costa wins Mentoring Award for Cultural and Artistic Responses to the Environmental Crisis

The Prince Claus Fund, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, has announced the 12 winners of the 2023 Mentoring Award: Cultural and Artistic Responses to the Environmental Crisis. Among the winners is Mozambican artist, filmmaker and storyteller Yara Costa, based on the Island of Mozambique.

Employing a variety of media, such as film, podcast, spatial audio, VR/XR and immersive exhibition experiences, Yara Costa wants to create engaging and socially transformative artistic and cultural interventions, alerting us to the urgent need to refocus on local oral traditions, seeking shared solutions to some of the most significant challenges faced today.

The Mentorship Award for Cultural and Artistic Responses to the Environmental Crisis brings together 12 mid-career artists and cultural professionals from around the world in a year-long interdisciplinary programme focusing on climate justice and the link between the climate crisis and the social, racial and environmental issues in which it is deeply entangled.

The group is supported by five mentors, as well as their peers, and works to accelerate their community-engaged practices that address environmental issues. This year’s participants, who come from countries such as Algeria, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Palestine, South Africa and Mozambique, work in a variety of disciplines.
